Caregiver burnout is the physical and emotional exhaustion that builds when you care for someone without enough rest or help. It is common, it is real, and the fix starts with taking a break before you hit empty.
On an airplane, they tell you to put your own oxygen mask on first. Caregiving works the same way. You cannot keep caring well for someone you love if you are running on fumes.
Signs you may be burning out
- You are tired all the time, even after sleep.
- You are short-tempered with the people you love most.
- Your work performance is slipping, or you are using up your time off on caregiving.
- Your personal life has shrunk to almost nothing.
- You keep skipping your own doctor visits, meals or exercise.
- You feel guilty any time you are not caregiving.
What actually helps
- Schedule breaks, do not wait for them. A standing weekly break gets used. A someday break does not.
- Share the load. Make a list of tasks others can take: meals, rides, laundry, a few hours on Saturday.
- Get outside help early. Respite care can be a few hours a week, an overnight, or coverage while you travel.
- Keep one thing that is just yours. A walk, a class, coffee with a friend.
